I’m definately behind the times on this, but I just discovered Bill Moyers’ new show on PBS, Bill Moyers Journal. You can watch all of the episodes for free on his website. Good for me because my TV can’t even pick up PBS so the internet is my only source of news and entertainment.
I spent a couple hours watching interviews the other night, and the one that sticks out the most is the interview with Victor Gold.
Victor Gold got his start in politics as a speech writer and advisor to Barry Goldwater, the republican candidate running against LBJ in 1964. He went on to work for such conservatives as Spiro Agnew and George HW Bush. He even co-authored books with both George Bush senior and Lynn Cheney.
So what did Victor Gold have to say about the current political climate?
The impact of the sound bite mentality which you find in both parties…is there’s been a debasing of the system. Because if you listen to these — I call them the Stepford candidates — on both sides in these debates the only two candidates that speak clearly are the ones they call the kooks.
I think it’s fairly significant when anybody who worked in Washington for decades says something like that, more so when their career was spent working closely with powerful conservatives. His new book is titled Invasion of the Party Snatcher: How the Holy Rollers and the Neocons Destroyed the GOP.
You can watch the full interview or read the transcript on Bill Moyers’ Website. [watch] [transcript]
